Where to stay near Bwindi
Bwindi has four trailheads, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, and each has accommodation nearby in different categories. The roads between them are long and winding, so a stay that is only "near the park" can still mean a long early drive on the morning of the trek.
Choose the area after you know the sector of your permit. If you want accommodation arranged with the trek, compare the gorilla safari packages, which list where you sleep. The lodge you pick matters less than its position.

Bwindi lodges by sector
Where to look for each trailhead. These are areas, not recommendations of single places.
| Sector | Where to stay | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Lodges, bandas and camping near the trailhead in the northwest | The northwest trailhead. Most people sleep in the sector the night before. |
| Ruhija | Near Ruhija in the east, or in the Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi area as a base | A base in Kabale or at the lake does not mean an included transfer to the briefing. |
| Rushaga | Near the trailhead in the south, or in Kisoro or around Lake Mutanda | Reached from Muko and Kisoro. Ask how long the morning drive is. |
| Nkuringo | Lodges, bandas and camping near the trailhead in the south, or in Kisoro or around Lake Mutanda | Kisoro to Nkuringo is about 35 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. |
For most trekkers, the usual choice is to sleep inside your own sector the night before. Use Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mutanda for a rest day before or after the trek, when the early start does not matter.

Types of accommodation
What the categories mean for a trek.
Lodges
Lodges are the usual choice for a trek stay and exist at all four trailheads. They vary a lot in size and comfort, so read what the price covers: meals, transfer to the briefing and laundry are common questions.
Bandas
Bandas are simple rooms or cottages. They are found at Buhoma and Nkuringo. Availability and booking terms differ by location, so confirm before you plan around one.
Camping
Camping is offered near Buhoma and Nkuringo. Pitch and facilities depend on the site, so ask what is provided and what to bring.
Lake bases
Lake Bunyonyi near Kabale and Lake Mutanda near Kisoro are popular places to rest before or after a trek. Neither has a guaranteed transfer to the briefing, so ask. See Lake Bunyonyi for the lake.
What to ask before you book
Questions that save a long morning.
Distance to the trailhead
Ask how long the drive to your briefing point is and whether the lodge arranges it. Use the getting there page for road distances.
Early breakfast
Tracking starts at 08:00 and the briefing comes first, so breakfast has to be early. Ask if a packed lunch is included.
Total price
Rates change with season and category, and extras add up. Ask for the full price in writing, including meals and transfers. Do not assume the gorilla permit is part of it.
Cancellation
Terms differ by place. Read them before you pay, in particular for the nights around your permit date, which cannot be moved easily. See gorilla permits.
Stopovers on the way
If you arrive from the north, you can break the drive at Queen Elizabeth National Park, which has its own lodges guide. Coming from Kampala, Lake Mburo is a common stop, with its own lodges guide.
Bwindi lodges: frequently asked questions
Where should I stay for gorilla trekking in Bwindi?
Near the trailhead of your sector. The four sectors have separate access roads, and a stay that is only near the park can mean a long early drive. Choose after you know the sector of your permit.
Can I stay in Kabale or Kisoro and trek from there?
Yes, as a base, but the transfer to the briefing point is not guaranteed. Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi are used for Ruhija, and Kisoro and Lake Mutanda for Rushaga and Nkuringo. Ask about the drive time and who arranges it.
Is camping possible?
Camping is offered at Buhoma and Nkuringo. Facilities vary, so confirm what is provided.
How much does a lodge cost?
Rates vary widely with season and category. Ask for the total price in writing and check whether meals, transfers and the permit are included.
Is the gorilla permit included in the lodge price?
Not by default. Foreign visitors buy permits through a licensed operator, and the permit is a separate item of $800 for non-residents under the UWA tariff for July 2024 to December 2026. Check the current amount before booking.
Do lodges arrange the transfer to the briefing?
Some do and some do not. Ask whether the transfer is part of the price, how long the morning drive is and who arranges it.
