The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

On a normal trek you spend one hour with a habituated gorilla group. On the Gorilla Habituation Experience you can stay up to four hours with a family that is still being accustomed to human presence. The four hours are the maximum observation time from the moment you meet the gorillas. The walk in and the walk back come on top, so this is not a full day beside the animals.

The activity starts at 06:30, and the return time varies. The permit costs more than a trekking permit: $1,500 for foreign non-residents in the UWA tariff for July 2024 to December 2026. Check the current amount before you book, and note the rise planned for 2027 below.

For most visitors, the normal trek is enough to see the gorillas well, and it costs about half as much. The Habituation Experience suits people who want more time with one family and accept the early start and the higher price. See gorilla trekking for the standard trek and permits for every category.

Where and how many people

The practical limits of the experience.

The Habituation Experience is usually run from Rushaga, in the south of the park, with small groups of about four guests. Do not assume another sector. Ask your operator which sector, which family and how many places your date has, because the number of places is limited. Rushaga is reached from Kisoro, and the sectors page explains the four starting points.

Expect the same care rules as on a normal trek: a minimum age of 15, no flash, and no visit if you have a cold or a contagious illness. Confirm these with your operator for the Habituation Experience. The terrain is steep, with long hours on your feet, so read the advice on what to wear.

A day on the habituation trail

The order of the day.

Early start

The activity begins at 06:30, earlier than a normal trek. That means a short night, so choose lodging near the right trailhead.

Walk to the family

The walk to the gorillas is part of the day and comes before the four hours start.

Up to four hours

The four hours are a maximum, not a promise. The visit can end earlier.

Return

The return time varies with the walk. Do not plan anything fixed for the afternoon.
